When I lived in Hermosa Beach, a lot of my guy friends had longboards and I miss seeing them pass by me on the sidewalk every day. Skateboards are so perfect for beachside living (and city living too). Luckily there are a plethora of new artisans crafting boards, both short and long, that are as functional as they are well designed... like these beauties, by Salemtown Board Co. in Nashville.
Salemtown Board Co. was founded by friends, Jacob Henley and Will Anderson with a mission to employ, train and mentor the neighborhood urban youth. As many of the young men in their community of Salemtown in Nashville were growing up without a male role model or father figure in their lives, the pair felt a strong desire to create a business model that could create a lasting brand and also begin to change the lives of young men in the neighborhood. Now owned by brothers Will and his brother, Schuyler, Salemtown Board Co. employs two male teens, teaching them important life skills that empower the teens with a sense of pride and purpose- and a good paycheck.
Based on looks alone, this one is my favorite. It's The Thunderstick cruiser, shaped from solid Middle Tennessee oak
With an entrepreneurial spirit, the guys have slowly expanded their offerings to include home goods, tee shirts and hats- all with a very cool, minimal and clean aesthetic. Check out the entirety of their shop, here. And if you have a moment, watch this video about their endeavors from CBS Sunday Morning.
