Although Dorothy Shain is a southern girl- native to Greenville, SC. and currently residing in Charleston, her artistic influences reach far beyond the Mason-Dixon line. During her studies at SMU in Dallas, she spent a Semester at Sea and sailed around the world. The vibrant sights and varied, local experiences colored her world view. In her art, she embraces color, spontaneity, playful patterns and mixed media.
Dorothy, "The Tropics Collection of collages is inspired by summer travel. I can't stop dreaming of tiny islands where the water is crystal clear, the fruit is exotic and the wildlife runs free." These mixed media pieces are crafted on handmade Italian paper.
I first fell for Dorothy's work when I saw her pool bar paintings on an Instagram feed. These were inspired by her time in Miami and as I am a big fan of the pool bar, I love the happy, carefree feelings they elicit. Check out Dorothy's site to see the entirety of her art collection, which now includes some truly stunning hand dyed linens.
