A Stroll Through Bologna, Part 1

My home base during my Italian trip was the culturally rich city of Bologna. Besides the food, I fell in love with the miles of porticoes that grace these ancient streets.

If you like food, you'll like Bologna. It's a visual culinary feast, no matter which street you stroll...

I particularly liked Via Pescherie Vecchie, a lively street with a little bit of everything.

I began this morning with my friend Angela's parents, Odette and Mauro, who have lived in Bologna for 30 years.

Like every Italian, they have their favorite coffee spot - The Fashion Cafe, which they visit without fail every morning around 10am. Mauro orders an espresso, Odette, a cappuccino estivo.

They have a pastry or my favorite, pasticcini. These are bite sized pastries often filled with cream, custard or chocolate.

Mauro reminded me that coffee is great but it's an afterthought. The important part is the ritual- meeting up with friends, small talk, hugs and hellos.

After breakfast, my traveling buddy, Vanessa and I stumbled upon what quickly became our favorite section of Bologna, on Via Giuseppe Petroni. The first store we found was Alce Nero.

This is a modern cafe and market all in one. All the high quality foods you find here are organic and eco-friendly.

After devouring pasta all day every day for two weeks, we were ecstatic to find their vegetarian buffet. We loaded up and felt healthy again...

But then had a setback when we walked a few feet down the street. Stefino Bio is one of the city's very few organic, fair trade gelato shops so we had to try.

They are known for their chocolate and pistacchio based flavors but we had a liking for wasabi and the strawberry. Delicious...The food coma that is Italy continues. Stay tuned for Part 2 at noon.

I wish I could find a pasticceria in America as good as those in Italy.

I've traveled to many cities in Italy but have never been to Bologna. After reading about Bologna here, as well as about the region of Emilia-Romagna in general, I think I ought to head back there very soon and check it out.

Bologna is our new home and it is quite charming! Next time you are here you have to try the gelato at "La Sorbetteria" on via Castiglione just across the way from Ristorante di Fabio. Love the post! thanks for sharing
